What makes a member "pending"

Hi - I’m putting this here because I’m developing an extension that uses the member_member_register hook.

To make a long story short, I just need to know how to change a member’s status from pending to active in the back end. Is it setting the authcode field in exp_members to blank? That’s what I think it is but I want to make sure I’m not missing anything. Thanks!
