How will upgrading EE affect existing extensions?

I’m starting to use some extensions such as the multi-drop-down custom field and the custom field searching extension. But I’m wondering if I use these features, since they are not part of EE, will I end up having trouble getting them to work with future upgraded versions of EE. It seems to me that if I use the query module vs the custom field extension there wouldn’t be future issues since the query module is always packaged with the full EE. Thoughts?

That’s what I was thinking. I’m worried if I create a bunch of web pages that rely too much on extensions or modules that are not supported by EE, it could be a nightmare trying to upgrade in the future. Even worse, if I rely on too much non-EE code, and the extension ends up dying and stops being supported that could also be a nightmare since now I have a bunch of web pages that don’t work and have a large part of the code that needs to be rewritten.

Had that happen early in the game. I now try to avoid add-ons unless absolutely necessary. That said, there are some dedicated add-on developers that have been around a long time and consistently support their programming so it somewhat depends on reputation.
