Hello, I’m currently working on a little map interface that would allow me to show a map in my entries. in order to keep things as unobtrusive as possible I thought of the following procedure - setting up a custom field that holds all the geo data to be shown on the map. the interface would then create the code in JSON format an feeds the code back into my EE custom field - here is a little preview of an early alpha: http://net4visions.com/labs/iMap
Looks nice. Would that be a custom field, or an additional tab in the publish screen.
I think some work could be done to make the interface a bit cleaner and clearer. There are so many options that it becomes a little overwhelming. But it is also impressive in that it has so many options.
Are you thinking of allowing settings that would allow you to customize what shows up for a user? I could see this being used in a real estate listing site where some of the options wouldn’t be appropriate.

thanks for your post - a custom field would hold the JSON code produced by the iMap script whereas a user can either incl. all the map settings (options) if desired. as to the interface, I’m very open to your suggestions to make it clearer and cleaner.
That’s pretty amazing. What would the publish options be for this? The geo solutions I have seen for EE so far seem to offer ways to show one icon on a map, but not a bunch of icons - say an entire weblog or category on one map.
I can imagine wanting a way to attach the colors to categories automatically. That might trip up the simplicity of your solution though.
I’d want a way to set a default set of choices per weblog.
And thinking about client proofing all of those choices… it might be good to have per-weblog default settings in the extensions part of the CP so that the person creating the entry only enters info that changes for each marker. Maybe there is an “advanced” section that’s hidden behind a tab or a slide where they can change the defaults on a per-entry basis.
I think it’s really handsome. Thanks for showing it.
