MH’s File Extension & the Liberty of Opening Another Thread

I’ve taken the liberty of opening a new one because the original thread for Mark Huot’s File extension is very long.

My problem is that I can’t find the Configuration setup. There’s a screenshot of it at the File docs at markhuot.com, but I don’t see that when I go to my file upload screen on the control panel. Without that I can’t get it to create thumbnails.

Also, it seems strange that I absolutely must upload a file and can’t simply enter a filename. What if my picture has already been uploaded, such as if I am reusing a picture I’ve already used before? I have to create another copy. This seems a waste of time and bandwidth for the viewer of the site who may end up viewing the same picture twice with different names.

That’s my gripe. What’s great is that this is a very user-friendly improvement to the EE control panel. It’s very nice not to have to go through a number of screens of a popup to upload a file.

I’m going to shift this one down to ‘Extensions’ since it’s third party- and I haven’t used it enough to be able to advise.

That said- it’s an extension- right? The config for those is accessed via ‘Admin- Utilities- Extension Manager’- if it has a frontend cp? You should be able to click on the extension name and edit stuff. (Or was I completely missing the point of the question?)

Hi,

No problem with moving – I didn’t put it here because I thought this was about help writing extensions only.

This one has no cpanel screen of its own. My understanding from its docs is that it’s supposed to add an area to the current File Upload screen but that isn’t happening.

It actually adds an area to the Fie Upload Preferences screen for each File Upload Preference. Admin > Weblog Administration > File Upload Preferences. Click to Edit one of your Upload directories and you will see the settings there, below the usual settings.

mdesign, that’s what I’m not seeing. no addition to the Admin > Weblog Administration > File Upload Preferences screens.

See attached.

UPDATE: Ah right, I think I know: I have to remove this file upload path then recreate it. Sorry, I think this was addressed within the gargantuan thread somewhere.

UPDATE 2: Nope, that didn’t do it.

What version have you installed? 3.1.1, which I think is the newest as of this writing? Have you uninstalled and then re-installed the extension? Sometimes that does the trick for me…

Yes, 3.1.1. Just disabled then enabled but didn’t help. Any more ideas?

UPDATE: Then tried actually removing the file from the /system/extensions folder then reuploading it but still no dice.

Wow, you’re baffling me here. Do you have a custom field in a weblog that is set to “File” as the field type? That’s putting the cart before the horse, though, I think.

You have ENABLED this extension, correct? That has been the downfall of lesser people.

What about clearing caches? (I’m just pulling out all stops here…)

Sure, fields of type file are set up and working in weblogs already (so yes, enabled!). Just cleared caches but still nothing.

Wow, OK, thought I could help, but that’s all I can think of right now. Anyone else have an idea for Adam? 😊

No problem. if you do figure it out, and the answer isn’t too terribly embarrassing (I know how that can be…) I’d like to know what you did to get it working.

Sure, I’ll post it, even if it reveals that my even folly is foolish.

The same thing happened to me. See my issues in the other thread.

I eventually got around it by entering the necessary settings manually in the database table the extension creates.

It was working perfectly on one site, but the same conditions (1.6.2, all other extensions disabled, etc…) don’t work on a particular site. The extension works fine except for the configuration screen being non-existent.

Sorry I can’t be more of a help but you can certainly change the settings manually in the DB.

Been looking for this thread as I finally have to fix this issue once and for all on this site. And the response is from Slapshotw! Thanks for the reply. Thing is, I’ve never seen how it’s supposed to be, so I’m not sure how to change the DB. Guess I’ll install it on another site and see what it does. -Adam
