Can I use CRUD commands in a plugin?

The docs show using the query module, but what about insert/update/delete? Can this be done in an plugin? If so, do i just do it with PHP? A little direction would be great.

The query module is just for information retrieval in a template. To communicate with the database within your add-on, you would use the Database class.
