For those interested, here are a few areas that we’re currently using Playa on NavigantConsulting.com: - http://navigantconsulting.com/industries/construction/ (and related pages) - In the Spotlight banners and Key Contacts

How did you define what sub-navigation went into each page? I assume you could use Playa for this also?

At the moment I am using categories (which represent pages) then assigning the page I am working to the categories I want it to appear in.

You could if you didn’t mind the possibility of the same page showing up in multiple sections.

But that’s now what I did there – Playa didn’t exist yet when I set that up. Each section just has it’s own weblog.

Yes that’s what I was getting at. Some clients like to have related pages which will overlap so I assume this ext will be a godsend!

PS. Is it possible (but not necessarily possible for you to get it done!) to add a category filter? For example I might want the client to only have access to entries from a particular category.

It’s possible, but it would get very messy since you can select multiple weblogs, and each weblog can have it’s own category group.

Mmm would be great if that option was possible but only if you locked into one weblog…

Oh I forgot you work for a living!

Brandon, this extension is absolutely great. It solves many problems I’ve been wrestling with. I especially like the ability to order the chosen entries.

Several additional features would make this a killer.

  • Ability to search titles (helpful when there are hundreds or thousands of entries and you already know a word in the title)*
  • Ability to choose categories*
  • Ability to control whether weblogs are collapsed in the field selection area (on the left side)
  • Ability to work with QuickSave

*The first two functions can be seen in the Selected Items module, screen shot attached.

Keep up the great work!

Thanks for the feedback, seejay!

I definitely plan on adding a quick search feature… We’ve got a couple Playa fields in Navigant that list several hundred entries and I can certainly feel the need for it.

You’re the second person to request categories. I think it would get messy, given that you can select multiple weblogs and each weblog can theoretically have its own category group. But I’ll consider it.

I’ve been thinking about possibly just making all weblogs collapsed by default, if there are more than one weblogs selected. Would that satisfy your needs? (I would rather not add a preference for it.)

Quick save is obviously something that needs to be addressed. I will look into it when I have the time.

Brandon-

  1. I’m glad you can see why a quick search would be helpful with large numbers of entries.

  2. Collapsing all the weblogs by default would be very good. Just like any collapse/expand outline that starts in the closed position.

  3. You wouldn’t have to load categories based on weblogs. The selection options could include a quick search, all weblogs, and all categories; they would simply be used to help find titles. You are right, you could quite easily end up with an empty set. But after you found that entry in a haystack, you could change the parameters for the next find.

Thank you for considering these possibilities. Nevertheless, Playa is already excellent as it is!

Bugs me that these multi-relationship extensions (yours and Mark’s) don’t work nice with PHP4. Not you fault at all, but I’m on a box that I can’t upgrade in the too near future - so these require a little core hack. Ah well. Time to just make a special category group and have those categories represent pages.

Personally, I think the time has come, finally, where one might reasonably expect PHP5. Since 1/2008 PHP 4 is no longer officially supported, and even critical security fixes will not be provided after 2008-08-08. High time to change.

Just updated the extension to v. 1.0.8, which fixes a couple bugs.

Hi Brandon,

Once again thanks for such a great add-on to ExpressionEngine. Just wondering what bugs have been fixed?

Also would it be possible (going on from this post here) to somehow add in a different way of doing a search for this to work. What I am thinking is let’s say you only want people to be able to choose 10 items (actually in this case any number can be used as it isn’t really related to what I am about to ask 😉 ). At the moment your extension handles this admirably.

Now let’s say you have 20,000 entries that you can select from! I think you may know where I am going with this already. If you bring up a Publish form then it is probably going to take quite a while to display those entries in the drop-down and could very likely crash the browser I would think. I was thinking that maybe a great way to handle this would be instead of showing the entries in the custom field that you could click a button or something that then brings up a pop-up window which basically shows pretty much the same kind of thing as the EDIT panel where you can have check boxes next to the items you would like to add. Also paginate the results but when clicking on the next page if anyone has already chosen any entries then ask them if they would like to add these items to the list first and then go to the next page. Next up if clicking on the title of the entry then perhaps it could use the live-look template to show the person the entry so that they can decide first if this is in fact the correct one that they want. Maybe instead of a new window that could be handled in a lightwindow or something like that? 😉

Last but not least perhaps some settings so that you could say this weblog shows all entries in the field, this one shows the button so if you had a weblog where you knew that you would only ever have say 10 entries in it then this wouldn’t harm for them to be shown in the field but if like the example above you had say 20,000 or even lots more then it would show the button instead? You could choose on a weblog by weblog basis what to do.

That would be absolutely fantastic and I think the most user friendly system possible. Of course probably a LOT of work involved in doing that so please tell me to take a long walk off a short pier if it all sounds too much!! 😉

Again, thanks for such a great extension. This is really really helpful.

Best wishes,

Mark

I totally agree. I can’t wait until I’m able to upgrade the box I’m on. Soon!

However, that doesn’t solve the existing problem of these multiple-relationship fields not working with a “Quick Save”.
