Hi, I’m coming back to this question because it is quite similar to my problem right now. What I want to do is to send a notification automatically to every MEMBER whenever I post a new weblog entry. It seems rather inappropriate for me to enter a list of mail adresses because of two reasons: - The number of members is a little to high to do this (now 80+ and growing). - I don’t want to update the list whenever a new member registers. Is this possible with ExpressionEngine?
An idea just came to me when writing this: It might be possible to create a mailing list and send it to this mailing list. But is there a way to keep the mailing list updated automatically?

This is not a built-in feature of EE, I am afraid. As you have discovered, you can have EE notify specific mail addresses, but not whole usergroups.
That said, there is a third party extension that can automatically notify one of your mailinglists. This is not exactly the same thing as a member group, as you’d still need to add members to the mailinglist, but it should get you close to your goal.
Hi,
what I want to achieve is that every member on my webpage is notified when I publish a new weblog entry. I found out that there is a way to send a notification automatically to a list of mail adresses, but I don’t want to stick to that because my member list is a little to big for this field and I don’t want to update it every time a new member registers.
Is there a way to to this, possibly via mailing lists?
Best, Jan
Not automatically- at least not stock. (The mailing list approach isn’t stock either, as I recall.)
Now you could manually send one to your members via the ‘Communicate’ tab each time you publish. That page does allow you to select member group(s) and send to the entire group. It will also ‘batch’ the emails- which is why it’s tricky trying to do it automatically. You need to leave the window open and let it cycle through all emails that need to be sent- not necessarily feasible after submitting to ‘publish’ w/a large member list.
I thought I’d seen a third party module around that might do what you want, but I checked Solspace and Leevi’s collection and didn’t spot it- those were my best two guesses, so I could have been wrong on that one.
In any case- make sense what your options are? If you like, I could shift to ‘How to’ for brainstorming. But stock- the automatic ability isn’t there. Manually, it can be done ‘out of the box’ via ‘Communicate’.
Thanks Ingmar, I didn’t find my posting on the page I bookmarked so I gave it another shot.
Your reply answers my question, but sadly not the way I hoped 😉 Would’nt it be great idea for a feature to make this possible. Two things can be done: automatically generate notifications and send mails to members. Just combine the two things 😉
Thank you very much. Jan
Hi folks,
I checked out the extension and it roughly does what I wanted. If anyone has experiences with this extension, I’d like to ask him or her several questions:
Notice: Undefined variable: temp in /is/htdocs/wp1101275_WR8NCW6ZJX/www/system/cp/cp.communicate.php on line 1058 Warning: Cannot modify header information - headers already sent by (output started at /is/htdocs/wp1101275_WR8NCW6ZJX/www/system/cp/cp.communicate.php:1058) in /is/htdocs/wp1101275_WR8NCW6ZJX/www/system/core/core.functions.php on line 296
The entry is submitted and the notification to. What’s wrong?
Best regards, Jan
I don’t think UpdateMail has been updated in quite some time - note the copyright date of 2006 on the page.
I tried it on a site shortly after it appeared, but found that it sent emails every time the post was saved – so each time I made small edits to the entry another email went out.
That wasn’t acceptable to me so I uninstalled it.
