Communicate - select a recipient from list of members?

The Communicate tab lets me send an email to all members of a certain category of member, but if I want to send an email to a particular member then I’m on my own to remember their email address.
Is there any way to display a list of members from within the Communicate tab, so I can choose recipients individually? Or to display the list in a pop up window?
If not, has anyone written an extension for this?
If not, what would be the best way to go about this?

I don’t recall seeing an extension like this. Would you like me to move the thread so you’d get more interaction from 3rd party extension authors?
