Can simplecommerce module be used for a simple non-profit membership registration form?

I’ve been asked by a non-profit I do work for whether we can use ExpressionEngine (which they purchased) to also allow new and renewing members to sign up and pay their donation via paypal or ideally by credit card. Is the simplecommerce module up to such a task?

I’m using a Solspace Freeform form currently for people to enter their information, but I may have to scrap that, since Solspace feels their module wouldn’t work for this application (with the simplecommerce module).

Members have several levels of donation they can make for various levels of membership like most non-profits (though this needn’t be automated - only the payment system needs to be).
