Forum Module: Anonymous Users

Hi everyone
Maybe this is a really obvious question and I am just being dumb; but what are anonymous forum users, and how do they make themselves anonymous?
My immediate understanding was this is a preference members can set to prevent their member name from appearing in the active members list, however I don’t see where members are able to set their preference to remain ‘anonymous’.
Am I missing something?

Yup, this had me stumped at first, but if you go to :

You will see an option to hide your online status.
I’ve got a little diferent question. I’m looking for where is the information if the logged user is Anonymous or not stored. I need to work with this information and detect in custom application, if current user is Anonymous or not.
