I have created an extension to send an update notice when a new post is created or edited. It is available at http://www.drivingmenuts.net/projects.php. Installation is fairly simple and the way it works is slightly less simple, but not too difficult. Please check it out and if you have questions or suggestions, let me know from the contact form on the site.

I don’t check this forum very often so support is best handled through the site.

Thanks for sharing, drivingmenuts. Btw, your name is the punchline for one of the best pirate jokes ever. 😉

Just as a side comment, I can’t wait until devices like cell phones, blackberries, and other email capable devices can start reading feeds so people can wean themselves off of email as a notification tool. RSS/Atom is so much more bandwidth and people friendly than email. Not to mention, it probably won’t be long before we start to have to pay for each email to guarantee that it won’t be filtered by the major ISPs. :\

This was classified as a “top secret” plan. Why did you unveil it? 😉

Sorry about the broken link, y’all. It was pretty late for me when I posted it.

Poor drivingmenuts didn’t mention I’d had the whip on his back while he worked this out!

He’s done a great job!

Little confused. What does this extension provide that the built-in email notifications don’t?

This extension allows for site members/users to be notified of a new post. The current system allows you to be notified of say a new comment.

For people not using RSS it means they get a mail when you update.

It automatically sends an email when you post a new entry. The email contains a short message pointing the receiver back to the entry.

It’s handy for people who are watching a board and need to get updates.

Yeah tell that to the clients 😉. It seems though that even now people rely on email over RSS.

Only the FSM knows why…..

Yeah, it’s deeply ingrained; I have a client who thinks that his mailing list is “teh berries”. I don’t think it will be too long before we see a shift, though. AOL has already begun to use BadmailGoodmail Systems email certification. It’ll spread, and soon you won’t be able to get an email delivered from a site to an individual without paying postage.

Great extension. Small feature request though. At the moment the mail is sent whether the entry is posted first time or if it has been edited. I don’t know about anybody else but I make multiple edits until I am happy with an entry.

It would be great if you included in your settings options to send the update mail on New-Post or optionally on New-Post/Edit

If I might make an addendum to that, an additional hook could be used to add an option on the Publish page as to whether or not you want the entry to be processed by the email routine. Sometimes you’d want your edits to notify, but minor changes not, and I could see times where a new entry perhaps wouldn’t be desirable to send out notification.
