You also need to change the cp.communicate.php file as outlined earlier by going to this thread: http://ellislab.com/forums/viewthread/77289/.

This was confirmed today by Derek to be a bug and they are going to be changing it in the next release.

Doh. Made the change to cp.communicate.php and all worked perfectly.

How hard would it be to adapt this extension for comment notifications?

Just wanted to say thanks to Mr Hahn for posting the solution - I just ran into both of these issues myself and you saved me a lot of digging…
